River songs are a dime a dozen. Dam songs: A little hard to uncover…there’s no “Take me to the [Dam]” or “Ol’ Man [Dam].”
But we’ve cobbled together an eclectic dam-themed playlist for you, to help get you in the mood for a possible Natick Select Board decision this week on the Charles River dam in South Natick.
Oh yeah, lots of obligatory dam/damn references in those lyrics. Whether they’re all about actual dams, not so sure.
The Board meets on Wednesday, Oct. 19, with Charles River Dam Deliberation on the agenda sometime after 7pm.
I’ll have all my demons stuck behind a dam
Damn On the other side is all I am Man
Alice in Chains – “Dam That River”
Oh, you couldn’t dam that river
And maybe I don’t give a damn anyway So you couldn’t dam that river And it washed me so far away
Woodie Guthrie – “The Grand Coulee Dam” (performed by Lonnie Donegan)
Uncle Sam took up the challenge in the year of Thirty three
For the farmer and the factory and all of you and me He said, “Roll along Columbia. You can ramble to the sea But river while you’re ramblin’ you can do some work for me
Frank Black & The Catholics – “St. Francis Dam Disaster”
There was a well known water master man
He was the king , he could do anything The Saint Francis Dam disaster man Thought she was all right until around midnight
Drive-by Truckers – “TVA”
Thank God for the TVA
When Roosevelt let us all work for an honest day’s pay
Thank God for the TVA
The Arrogant Worms – “We are the Beaver”
You might think a rodent
Is a pretty lame choice For a national animal But don’t you listen to that voice ‘Cause all them birds ‘n predators Just take from the land But the Beaver always gives a dam We are the Beaver
Samantha Crain – “The Dam Song”
The water is pushing
The river is wishing
The dam break
My head is nodding
My dream is rotten
Wish the dam would break
John Paul Jones & friends – Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks”
If it keeps on rainin’, levee’s goin’ to break
If it keeps on rainin’, levee’s goin’ to break When the levee breaks, I’ll have no place to stay
Gorillaz – “Stop the Dams”
It sort of freaks me out
We need to unplug the dams You cannot stop the natural flow of thought with a cling and a clang

Great to see your continued coverage of the proposed waterfalls demolition. Thanks Bob.
The possible loss of the falls would be horrible tragedy. The songs you should be selecting would involve loss, death of a loved one, and the empty, vacant feeling when a dear friend or spouse passes.
You two crack me up!!!!!!
I love this list!
