Now that Natick has officially adopted a new Town Seal (effective Sept. 1, 2023, per Town Meeting’s vote on May 4), it’s on to the next graphic design challenge. The town is looking to create a suite of logos that will be used in all the places where Puritan minister John Elliot preaching to Indigenous peoples used to appear—on town vehicles and equipment, signs, the town website, and more.
The town wants your input via a 5-minute logo and branding survey.
To ensure accessibility for all interested parties, printed surveys will be available at select Town buildings including Town Hall, Morse Institute Library, Bacon Free Library, the Cole Center, and the Community Senior Center to ensure accessibility for all interested parties. Additionally, Town staff will do DEI-centric outreach to provide the survey to underrepresented groups.
Both online and printed surveys close on July 20.
Seals and logos
An official town seal is something that the law requires of all towns in the Commonwealth for official business and is intended to be used for documents such as vital records. Some towns remind their departments not to slap the seal willy-nilly onto every available surface. Although Natick has historically done just that, using the town seal wherever it was needed, change is in the wind. No longer shall Natick sully its seal by association with branding or other commercial purposes. That’s where the need for a suite of logos comes in.
Natick wants to get in on the branding action, just like the corporate big dawgs such as Apple, Google, or Pepsi. Since the town is faced with the task of removing all the old imagery from pretty much everywhere—across digital platforms, as well as on business cards; emergency and maintenance cars and trucks; apparel; buildings and signs—the timing seems right for such a project.
If things go well, the new logos will evoke an immediate positive association with Natick. Look for ideas based on the survey input to be presented in late summer.
An outside professional graphic designer will be hired for the project, which will be funded through the federal American Rescue Plan Act.
