The Natick Select Board on Dec. 13 is slated to hold a public hearing regarding an application for an all alcohol package store license at 54B E. Central St., the former convenience store that sits less than a half mile from Dion’s to the west and just over a half mile from Town Line Liquors to the east.
The business, slotting into what at one point looked to be a successor convenience store called Mile 10 Market, would be dubbed Mile 10 Spirits at roughly the 10-mile mark of the Boston Marathon course. This is the strip mall that also includes Shanghai Tokyo and Bill’s Pizzeria.
The obvious question of why another liquor store would be needed in such close proximity to existing ones will undoubtedly be raised during the hearing for the applicant, Neel Patel, who hails from Holliston. The Select Board a year ago had an, uh, spirited discussion about how to handle some newfound off-premises alcohol licenses, and the public was assured by one member that “This is not the Wild West. We’re not opening the doors wide open for liquor stores on every corner.”
Well, this 1,600 sq. ft. space technically isn’t a corner…
It is a somewhat prominent location, though. A long-term temporary sign for Mile 10 Market went up in the summer of 2022, indicating that the former 7-11 location would continue as a convenience store. Rumblings about complications involving a tobacco license were to said have stymied efforts to open a new convenience store, and our efforts to reach the supposed contact for the property failed to produce much other than a “no available information to share at this time” more than a year ago.
The town last year shot down a bid by a liquor store to relocate to Rte. 9 west because it was too close to another package store on Rte. 9 and failed to show a public need for it in the proposed space. The applicant wound up finding another space on North Main Street instead.
