This year marks the 350th anniversary of King Philip’s War. The Natick Historical Society and Bacon Free Library had planned to host Shawn Quigley from the National Park Service on Oct. 4 to speak about how Deer Island in Boston Harbor served as an internment camp for Native Americans during that War.
Sounds compelling right? Unfortunately, the event’s been cancelled “due to the current lapse in appropriations from the federal government for the National Park Service.”
More programs remain on tap from the Historical Society, including an Oct. 18 program featuring Historical Society Director Niki Lefebvre for a conversation about how 17th-century Natick looks from the perspective of 21st-century historians.
Perhaps more an even more crushing result of the federal government shutdown that hits home. This social media message from the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center: “Due to the lapse in appropriations Natick Soldier Systems Center will have limited updates on social media.”
The truly tough result, though, is this: “Military personnel will continue in a normal duty status without pay until such time as a continuing resolution or appropriations are passed by Congress and signed into law. Civilian personnel not engaged in excepted activities will be placed in a non-work, non-pay status”
