Natick Public Schools reopening plan decision pushed to Aug. 10

August 5, 2020 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

The Natick School Committee has postponed its Wednesday, Aug. 5 meeting, when it was set to vote on the town’s educational model for 2020-21, until Monday Aug. 10.

The decision on whether to go remote or hybrid was postponed as the result of the state being expected to release important information on Thursday, Aug. 6. One thing for sure is that Natick won’t start the school year with a full return to live, in-person schooling.

Natick Public Schools Supt. Anna Nolin at this past Monday’s School Committee meeting expressed frustration (as have other superintendents) with the state’s “putting things out in beta and then pulling them back, then putting them out, then pulling them back or not bringing them out.”

Among the challenges schools choosing a remote-only approach will face are tougher audits by the state and possible loss of federal dollars. Questions remain as well about what flexibility families that might choose one approach over the other, if given an option, will have to change their mind once they see what they’re students have gotten themselves into.

Look for school to start Sept. 16 under whichever plan Natick chooses, per an agreement between the state education commissioner and teacher’s association to allow for mandatory staff professional development. The Natick Public Schools system has been working closely with the town’s Board of Health to make its plans.

Memorial Beach in Natick closed due to high bacteria count

August 5, 2020 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Natick Recreation & Parks has announced the following:

Memorial Beach will remain closed today (Wednesday August 5th) due to a high bacteria count detected in this week’s water testing. To minimize the risk of illness from contaminated water, beaches are required to be tested for “indicator” bacteria. Memorial Beach is tested for Enterococci or E. coli each week and this week we had an exceedance. Memorial Beach will remain closed until a re-sample tests clear.

Not far away, Farm Pond in Sherborn was closed mid-week due to a high level of E. coli.

Natick Mall’s Lord & Taylor to close as part of Chapter 11 filing

August 4, 2020 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Lord & Taylor

Parent company Le Tote seeks a buyer for what remains of the fashion retailer, which has been around since 1826.

Lord & Taylor cites the “unprecedented strain” that the COVID-19 pandemic has put on its business.

The Mall has seen a series of announced closings as the pandemic goes on. Among them: Microsoft Store, Sur La Table, Lou & Grey and Wasabi. It’s not looking good for the Met Bar & Grill either. It’s website is kaput.

Here’s what’s still open at Natick Mall. The Mall reopened in early June after shutting down in March.

The Bagel Table headed to Natick

August 2, 2020 by Bob Brown 1 Comment

The Bagel Table, a local chain that serves New York-style bagels and a variety of other food and drinks, is next up at the corner retail space at 9 South Main St., across from Natick Common. This is the spot vacated in June by Common Cafe & Kitchen, a victim of the pandemic shutdown.

bagel table

The Bagel Table has locations in Ashland, Brighton and Chestnut Hill, with the Natick shop slated to open in September. A Wayland shop, originally planned for this past spring, is now set to open in October.

The eatery offers not just bagels, crispy outside and chewy inside, and schmears. Its menu includes assorted sandwiches and bakery goods, as well as salads, and hot and cold drinks. Its different locations offer a different mix of items and services.

The area could certainly use a new bagel option. Wellesley Square’s Bruegger’s Bagels has been closed since early in the pandemic, and has declined to say whether its “temporary” closing is permanent.

The Bagel Table got its start in pop-up locations in 2015, and opened its first standalone store in Chestnut Hill in 2018.

Its Natick shop will reside next door to Sweetwaters Cafe, which is hiring. If you want to work there, you’ll need to answer questions on the app like “Demonstrate Your Salesmanship By Promoting Yourself To Us.” In other words, you’re gonna need to up-sell.
