Natick dog park update

August 18, 2020 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

FIDO, the group spearheading the new dog park on Rte. 135 along Lake Cochituate, hopes to soon open the facility once the town signs off on a few last things.

The groundbreaking for Eddie’s Park took place a year ago and an orientation meeting for dog owners was held over the winter in anticipation of a possible spring 2020 opening.  The dog gathering spot looks to be in pretty good shape, especially with volunteers this week doing some weeding and the Eddie’s Park sign recently being revealed.

FIDO’s Kelly McPherson gave a bit of an update on additional happenings regarding the park at last week’s Natick Conservation Committee meeting (starting at about the 40-minute mark on Natick Pegasus’s recording).

McPherson received the committee’s blessing to put both a Little Free Library and secured donation box outside the park. McPherson says she recently added such a library to her own front lawn.

One kink at the park has been that trees planted by the town have croaked as a result of the drought and not having a watering source. New trees will be planted once the water hookup is set.

Also, McPherson said about 20 perennials were swiped from the grounds and FIDO volunteers have begun replacing them with plants of their own (or will once the water connection is set).

“There have already been some shenanigans down there…” she said, referring to the plant thefts. “… so we really do need to get that park open and used,” she said.

How would you describe Natick’s shape?

August 17, 2020 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Can you pick out Natick on an unlabeled map of Massachusetts?

mass map

I’m guessing most Natick residents can’t whether they’ve lived here forever or not. It’s not quite like spotting Texas or Florida or even Massachusetts on a United States map.

This realization has hit people in recent weeks as they’ve attempted to pinpoint their community on various COVID-19-related maps that didn’t label the cities and towns.

So, what do you think? How would you describe the shape of Natick’s outline?

One of my kids suggests a Pokemon character called Onix in profile. I kinda see a dog’s head. You?

Stonegate shares update on St. Patrick’s parish property fire, development

August 14, 2020 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

A fire and vandalism at the former St. Patricks parish properties last week has prompted the planned boarding up of parts of the former school and convent to ward off future destruction, according to Dean Calivas, president of developer Stonegate. “We were quite disturbed, as I’m sure many others were,” he said, noting that there was quite a bit of destruction (broken windows, litter, spray painting) and that charges could be brought against those apprehended.

Calivas spoke during the citizen speak portion of the Select Board meeting, and he was invited to come back any time in the future, preferably on the pre-slated agenda.

St Patrick's Hall

Stonegate has some destruction of its own planned at 4 & 6 Lincoln St., and a barn, and has been taking care of pest control and water line capping. It was awaiting Board of Health approval before signing on a contractor for the work, and hopes to get work going in the next couple of weeks.

The developer has also received a new windscreen and expects to have that up in the next couple of weeks to make the construction site more aesthetically pleasing.

Stonegate has been seeking to develop the site for the past 5 years, and earlier this summer proposed a change of plans from a mixed use site (residential and commercial) to just residential.
