MLK Day 2021 events schedule—Natick, Massachusetts

Everyone is invited to enjoy a live pre-recorded program from 10am-11am, streamed online and through Natick Community Access TV (see more details below), featuring:

student performances and reflections
MLK Day Creative Contest winners from the Middle and High School
Interfaith Clergy representatives
special guests including local dignitaries and community leaders
a keynote reflection by The Rev. Dr. Gregory Groover, Pastor of the Historic Charles Street A.M.E. Church in Roxbury, MA

Immediately following the program, from 11am-12pm special MLK Day activities for all ages will be offered by community partners (via Zoom links).

Natick program for kids and families: Working with dangerous animals

What is it like to work with animals like cobras or rattlesnakes? Find out on Wed., Jan. 20, 4pm – 5pm via Zoom during this exciting program geared towards kids and families. Find out what some scientists are learning about venomous snakes by studying them in the wild and captivity. Learn how animal keepers and scientists stay safe when working with captive alligators or wild crocodiles. Why is it important to train captive polar bears and sea lions?

Natick, wildlife presentation — Joy Marzolf, naturalist, educator and photographer

Naturalist, educator, and photographer Joy Marzolf will cover all these topics and more. Learn all about working with dangerous animals from someone who has personally worked with venomous snakes, massive pythons, snapping alligators, huge polar bears, and more. Don’t miss meeting some live animals at the end.

About The Nightingale

In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn’t believe that the Nazis will invade France…but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne’s home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.

Save the date for Race Amity presentation

The Natick Historical Society and the Bacon Free Library will co-host a Zoom presentation of WGBH’s powerful documentary series American Stories: Race Amity and The Other Tradition on Tue., Feb. 2, 6:30pm – 8pm. This presentation will include a brief introduction to the film by Dr. William H. Smith (creator, executive producer, and writer of the series), a reading from the book Race Amity: A Primer on America’s Other Tradition, a viewing of the film Race Amity: America’s Other Tradition, a commentary by Dr. Smith, and a Q&A Session.

WHS Media Productions LLC created this documentary for the promotion of cross-racial and cross-cultural understanding.

Everyone is invited to join the 16th Annual Natick MLK Day Community Celebration in recognition of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The program runs 10am – noon. Zoom and Pegasus links will be available closer to Jan. 18th. Here’s the breakdown:

Flutie Foundation gives out $400K-plus to autism-serving organizations

The Doug Flutie Jr., Foundation for Autism distributed over $405,000 to 43 non-profit organizations as part of its annual grant cycle. The announcement came during the Flutie Family Holiday Spectacular virtual broadcast event earlier this month, where each organization was surprised on camera. In light of the extreme challenges that many people with Autism are facing this year, and thanks to the generosity of so many donors, the Flutie Foundation increased their overall funding in 2020 as compared to recent years.

“We are proud to increase our funding this year and invest in an amazing group of resilient organizations through our grant cycle,” said Doug Flutie, Natick High School graduate, and president and co-founder of The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. “These grants will help them continue their critical work of helping people and families affected by autism live life to the fullest.”
