Boston Marathon scene in Natick

April 17, 2023 by Bob Brown 2 Comments

Natick showed its Boston Marathon spirit on a rainy and damp Patriots Day to cheer on locals and the rest of the field at the 127th edition of the race.

Natick’s fastest finishers:

  • Eric Ashe finished 35th overall with a 2:21:36 (5:25 per mile pace) and was the top male runner in town
  • Cassie (Short) McLaughlin finished first among females in Natick with a 3:09:04 (7:40 pace). She ran for the Wellesley Scholarship Foundation.

Congrats to all who participated in the marathon. Thank you to all who shared photos, including Adam Pulzetti, of Adam Pulzetti Photography.

Natick well represented at student races during Boston Marathon weekend

April 14, 2023 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Update 4/16/23):

  • BAA Invitational results from the races on 4/15/23
  • Natick had even more representation from its students during marathon weekend than we first realized. More than a dozen Kennedy and Wilson Middle School students represented Natick for the B.A.A. Relay Challenge in Copley Square, according to Rachel Saks Aronis, who along with Natick Recreation & Parks Director Travis Farley brought back this program that was canceled in recent years due to COVID. Teams of 10 racers competed against each other on an out-and-back course of about 350 meters right on Boylston Street by the Marathon finish line. There were 6 relays total (2 determined by age and all were mixed gender). Natick took home 5th place – and a great looking trophy – for the All-Star Mile relay in competition with runners from schools in Boston and the metro-Boston area. This free BAA-sponsored program started in the late 1990s. Natick Recreation & Parks has some fun photos from the event on its Facebook page.

One of the great elements of the Boston Marathon weekend is the BAA Invitational race series that takes place on Saturday, April 15, in Copley Square.

The Invitational Mile features scholastic boys and girls from the cities and towns of the Boston Marathon course, as well as a field of professional male and female milers from around the world. In addition to being part of an exciting competition, student-athletes get some great swag.

Here are the bios of Natick’s young runners, provided by the Boston Athletic Association (if any proud moms/dads/guardians read this and want to share pics from the event with us, please do: natickreport@gmail.com):

PB for 5K: 21:43 – Finished in the Cambridge Classic 5K in 2022

Madeline David, Grade 12 at Natick High School

Here come the helicopters, Natick: It’s a Boston Marathon thing

April 13, 2023 by Admin Leave a Comment

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration will conduct low-altitude helicopter flights over Natick and the rest of the Boston Marathon race route Friday, April 14, through Monday, April 17, in preparation for the 127th edition of the race.

The Administration’s Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) aircraft—in this case, a twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter—will measure expected background radiation as part of standard preparations to protect public health and safety on the day of an event.

The helicopter will fly in a grid pattern over the areas at 150 feet (or higher) above the ground at a speed of about 80 mph. Flyovers will occur only during daylight hours and are estimated to take approximately two hours to complete per area.

NEST is part of the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Counterterrorism and Counterproliferation.
