Several times each year, Brimfield, Mass., home to only 3,694 people at the 2020 census, explodes with activity when it hosts the Brimfield Antique Flea Market. From antique dealers to collectors to shoppers, it is estimated that over 50,000 people come from all over the world to experience the oldest outdoor antiques event in the United States. 

The 2024 Brimfield season kicked off from May 14–19. Even a visit on the last day of the May show proved that the 2024 season of the Brimfield Antique Flea Market is off to a good start. 

At the fair, tents featuring a wide variety of treasures stretch seemingly endlessly in all directions. The tents are this numerous partially because the event is made up of about 20 shows right next to each other. Some of these shows charge an attendance fee, most but are free to enter. 

Even at an event featuring items as zany as miniature porcelain toilets, the staples, such as furniture, clothing, and jewelry, still manage to be unique, each carrying their own story and quirks. 

For Heather Fricchione, a Charlton, Mass. resident who attends the fair each year, these quirks are one of the best things about the fair. It is refreshing for her to find items that are different from the cookie-cutter ones she sees in stores. 

“I love the diversity [of items],” Fricchione said. “I love coming here and seeing all the eclectic-ness come together. Sometimes it’s fun to not even shop and just look at all of the different things and remember childhood items from a long time ago.” 

Vendors come to Brimfield for a variety of reasons, but most agree that they love selling at this event, which is well-known in antique dealers’ circles. 

Doug Sauders, a collector of vintage paper magazines, comic books, and sheet music, has been buying at Brimfield since he first heard of it almost 30 years ago, and has been selling there for quite a few years as well. He sells off items he doesn’t need anymore so that he can upgrade his collection. 

Sauders, who is from Pennsylvania, says that vendors come from almost every state on the East Coast to sell at Brimfield, and he has seen shoppers from other continents. 

“It’s a fun show [and] you get a worldwide audience,” Sauders said. 

Despite the breadth of locations from which buyers and sellers alike travel to Brimfield, the vast majority of the items sold represent white American culture. Francois Djenohan, however, sells art from West and Central Africa, and loves meeting new people with whom he can share his culture. 

“You bring your culture to this place for people to discover what you’ve got and where you’re from,” Djenohan said. 

Another vendor, who did not provide their name, said that they like selling at Brimfield in order to put items in the right place for a good price. Earlier that day, they had sold a handbag to a mother of a big family for just a few dollars. It made the mother very happy, the vendor said, and that was worth it for them. 

The Brimfield Antique Flea Market will be held again this year from July 9–14 and Sept. 3–8. Make sure to bring plenty of cash, as most vendors do not accept credit or debit cards. Or maybe don’t bring too much—you might spend it all!

The Brimfield Antique Flea Market is about 51 miles from Natick Center. So you can get there in roughly an hour, depending on traffic, mainly via the Mass Pike.
