Tour de Natick was a fun Father’s Day ride, not an intense race

June 20, 2022 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

As over 250 cyclists readied themselves for the Natick Rotary Club-organized Tour de Natick at the starting point between the post office and the Common Street Spiritual Center, a police officer shouted out a friendly directive: “Remember, this is a ride, not a race.”

The goal: have fun and keep the action on the 6-mile Tour de Natick course as unlike the Tour de France as possible—no crazy speeds, no glaring at the upstart about to pass you, no hyper-competitive peloton groupings. The annual Father’s Day tradition (except for two bye years due to that pesky pandemic) went off without a hitch, and raised nearly $10,000 to fund college scholarships for Natick students through race entrance fees and the event’s  20+ generous sponsors.

Rotary Club president Mark Canegallo said, “We’re super thankful to our sponsors. Middlesex Savings Bank has been with us every single year for 19 years. TJX stepped up as a new corporate sponsor for us, and Bernardi Auto is a major sponsor as well. Coach & Carriage Auto Body has always been a sponsor.” In addition, Wegman’s donated the food for the post-race bar-b-que.

In addition to the scholarship program, the Club gives a dictionary to each of Natick’s approximately 300 third graders. Over the past 15 years over 8,000 dictionaries, each one personalized with the receiving student’s name, have been donated.

Tigers in two: Natick Little League champs

June 15, 2022 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

The Natick Little League Tigers team, No. 1 through the regular season in the majors bracket, stayed that way until the end of the playoffs by topping the Nationals 2 games to none. We just missed the end of the game, but managed to snap a photo of the winners.

Congrats to all of this season’s players.

Natick Community Organic Farm 5K run/walk set for June 18

May 19, 2022 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

The Natick Community Organic Farm will host its 5K road race and walk on June 18 at 9am at the farm, located at 117 Eliot St., next to Memorial Elementary School.

The course consists of 3 roughly 1-mile loops on road, gravel, grass, and trail, where you’ll go through the farm, along an aqueduct and around the school.

It costs $35 to take part in the race, or $20 for a kids fun run. Registration is open.

Proceeds will support the farm’s scholarship fund, which provides financial assistance to students who would not otherwise be able to participate in the farm’s educational programming.

All participants receive a farm-related gift.

If you have questions, or would like to volunteer to help email the race organizers.

Our early candidate for Natick Little League MVP

April 30, 2022 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

This kid from the Nationals took the lead in the Natick Little League MVP race when he got a couple of Canada Geese to leave the mound before the game. This resulted in a flyover being added to the morning’s festivities following the parade.

Play Ball! Natick Little League holds first parade in 4 years

April 30, 2022 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Natick Little League officially kicked off the town’s youth baseball and softball seasons on Saturday morning with its first parade in four years, brightening the streets of South Natick with colorful uniforms and sparkling bats.

The past few parades have been nixed either due to rain or COVID-19, so kids and families were only too happy to brave a chilly start to the day with a little pomp & circumstance at Hunnewell Fields, then some games.

While the games officially began with the shouting of “Play Ball!” by one of the Natick High School varsity baseball players, it really began when one of the Little League officials asked before the first pitch “Does anybody have a glove?” Now that’s the Little League I remember…

And then there was the early favorite for league MVP that we discovered.

About 600 kids are participating in Natick Little League this season, according to Executive Director Matt Lodi. Thanks to all the volunteers for helping the not-for-profit league do what it does.
