Why hundreds of blue, pink, and white flags are displayed on the FCC lawn in Natick

December 30, 2025 by Deborah Brown

Members of First Congregational Church of Natick (FCC) installed hundreds of pink, blue, and white hand-held style flags symbolizing transgender pride on the church’s front lawn earlier this month. They did so to express unity after a Boston-based group’s Transgender Day of Remembrance display on the Boston Common was removed in an act of vandalism. On their website, FCC Natick said the church “stands in unwavering solidarity with our trans siblings,” calling the removal of the Boston flags “an act of erasure and hatred.”

The flags in Boston were placed legally, with a permit obtained from the City of Boston by The Queer Neighborhood Council. The display’s messaging honored trans and gender-expansive people lost to fatal violence in the United States since 2020. Installed on Nov. 16, the flags were supposed to remain on the Common through Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20. But the flags disappeared ahead of the Day of Remembrance.

To “read” the flags, go from top to bottom—light blue expresses the traditional boys’ color; pink for traditional girls; white for those transitioning, intersex, or with neutral or undefined genders.

We checked in with FCC to see how long the installation would be in place, but the office is closed until after the New Year so that staff may have some rest and renewal after the busy holiday season.
